Your cargo insurance

Safeguard your shipments

Global trade has grown exponentially in recent decades, requiring goods to be moved over long distances and by various means of transportation. These logistics challenges increase the complexity within the supply chain and also entail risk factors that can easily jeopardize the smooth flow of goods transport. This is where cargo insurance becomes important and is an essential safeguard for companies operating in the global market.

Investing in a comprehensive cargo insurance is not only a financial backstop, but also a strategic decision to ensure that your business activities are running smoothly. By incorporating risks and proactively protecting against unforeseen events, companies cannot only minimize financial losses but also strengthen their resilience to external influences.

Cargo insurance is crucial

Cargo insurance serves to protect companies from the financial consequences of damage or loss during transport. In principle, the freight forwarder's liability under the transportation contract is limited. The limitation affects both, the amount of damage and the scope of liability.

In the event of damage, e.g. in case of loss or damage, this may result in gaps in coverage for the principal of the freight forwarder / the party interested in the goods. In the case of transport damage, e.g. for multimodal transports - involving a sea route and if the location of damage is unknown - the freight forwarder's liability is limited to 2 SDR/kg in accordance with ADSp 2017. This can quickly lead to a considerable gap in coverage, especially for lightweight goods with a high value.

It therefore makes sense to take out cargo insurance to cover any gaps in coverage resulting from the ADSp liability.

Damaged goods

Upon opening an overseas container at the recipient's premises, it is discovered that water has penetrated the container during transportation. This renders the goods unusable and they have to be destroyed.

This damage is covered by the cargo insurance.

Losses due to natural disasters

While passing the Atlantic several containers, including an FCL container of an insured customer, go overboard in a severe storm.

The cargo insurance reimburses the declared insured value.

Political risks

Damage and loss of cargo due to political risks, such as war, may, as inevitable events, be excluded from the liability of the freight forwarder

In order to limit the economic loss of the interested party/owner of the goods such risks can be included in the cargo insurance (if necessary against an additional fee).

General Average

In the event of general average, the average and general average costs as well as the average bond guarantee are included in the scope of the cargo insurance.

Recent general average cases:

  • M/V Dali: Bridge collision outside Baltimore in March 2024
  • M/V Ever Given: blockage of the Suez Canal in 2021
