Cargo insurance is crucial
Cargo insurance serves to protect companies from the financial consequences of damage or loss during transport. In principle, the freight forwarder's liability under the transportation contract is limited. The limitation affects both, the amount of damage and the scope of liability.
In the event of damage, e.g. in case of loss or damage, this may result in gaps in coverage for the principal of the freight forwarder / the party interested in the goods. In the case of transport damage, e.g. for multimodal transports - involving a sea route and if the location of damage is unknown - the freight forwarder's liability is limited to 2 SDR/kg in accordance with ADSp 2017. This can quickly lead to a considerable gap in coverage, especially for lightweight goods with a high value.
It therefore makes sense to take out cargo insurance to cover any gaps in coverage resulting from the ADSp liability.
